Ten stretches to be done daily, either all in one session or spread through the day

Stretching is an often neglected by those short of time for exercise as it might offer less visible results than aerobic exercise or strength training. But it is so important for health, wellbeing and to support our ability to function well in daily life and in sports. A regular stretching program can:

  • increase flexibility and range of motion
  • improve posture
  • reduce or prevent back pain
  • reduce stress and calm the mind
  • reduce frequency and severity of tension headaches

The stretches in this sequence work on the major muscle groups. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds to 1 minute and repeat if you like.

A daily stretching practice is ideal, and particularly easy to fit in if you do a few at a time throughout the day.

If you only have time for one stretch try downward facing dog which stretches out the whole back surface of the body and legs as well as opening the shoulders and reducing tension in the neck.
